The impact of chronic stress & trauma can show up in our lives in many ways.

Trauma is an emotional and physical response to living through distressing events, situations, and relationships. The impact can show up through patterns of confusing or overwhelming emotions, behaviors, and thoughts that shape our views of ourselves, others, and the world. For example, maybe you learned to feel okay by “checking out” and living on auto-pilot. Maybe you repeat ingrained habits in relationships and get stuck, despite your best efforts to change the patterns. These patterns have some value and form to help us adjust, function, and survive during distressing situations. They help us cope with relationships that couldn’t meet our needs or were hurtful. In a healing therapy relationship, you can learn that your emotions make sense. You can also learn about those ingrained patterns, and how to move beyond them when they are no longer useful.

How I Help

  • Individual psychotherapy with adults that aspires to be relational, and strengths-based while using compassion & encouragement to motivate change.

  • I consider how our connections in relationships, society, and our natural environment, impact our well-being.

  • My worldview considers how systems of oppression and inequities (based on race, sociocultural factors, socioeconomic status, and political influence) impact mental health and well-being.

How I Help & Therapy Modalities

  • Training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy ™

  • Other Models that Inform How I Work

I often use theories and models of therapy that are rooted in how humans develop, interact with, and adapt based on the systems we are a part of. This can include our relationship with our own internal system. The official terms for therapy models that inform my work include Attachment theory, Polyvagal theory, IFS (internal family systems model), cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. Whatever the modality or tool, I believe that a therapeutic relationship that builds hope, trust, and understanding, along with a nudge forward, is important.

  • Mindfulness Principles and Practices

Mindfulness helps us observe our present moment-to-moment experience, and can increase our awareness of ourselves in a non-judgmental and accepting way. My work with clients is influenced by my own practice of trauma-informed mindfulness and mindful self-compassion.
